When I started Randy Kirk and Associates, I saw potential in becoming the marketing arm for small companies that they could not normally afford. With a background in almost every imaginable form of marketing except TV and bill boards, my theory was that I could analyze the marketing approach for companies with less than 50 employees, make recommendations, and help to execute marketing decisions for $500 - $1000 per month. This compared to hiring a full time person for this job at $80,000 up.
While this has been a solid business plan, and has resulted in a very quick accumulation of 15 clients, I decided to try an experiment last month. I sent out a special on just one type of marketing that I do to around a list of prospects, friends, and others. The offer was to do a single PR release for $149. For the most part, PR agencies wouldn't even talk to a new client for less than $2000 in budget. A single release would take the average writer a minimum of 3 hours to research and compose. Then it needs to be sent to several targeted media outlets with a personal follow up.
Therefore, even a freelance beginner would have to charge $200, and a serious, experienced PR person would charge at least $500. Unsurprisingly, the response was fast and brought serious new business into the company.
Using that result, I am now offering a menu of specific marketing products for the first time. And each of them is being offered at prices that are the equivalent to buying a 42 inch Flat Screen for $300.
